From Proto-Tai *haːnᴮ (goose). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩵ᩣ᩠ᨶ, Lao ຫ່ານ (hān), ᦠᦱᧃᧈ (ḣaan¹), Tai Dam ꪬ꪿ꪱꪙ, Tai Dón ꪬꪱꪙꫀ, Shan ႁၢၼ်ႇ (hàan), Phake ꩭꩫ် (han), Ahom 𑜑𑜃𑜫 (han), Zhuang hanq. Compare Middle Chinese (MC ngaenH, “wild goose”), Proto-Mon-Khmer *haan (goose), Proto-Khmuic *haːn (goose).
