From Proto-Tai *haːnᴮ. Cognate with Thai ห่าน (hàan), Northern Thai ᩉ᩵ᩣ᩠ᨶ, Lao ຫ່ານ (hān), ᦠᦱᧃᧈ (ḣaan¹), Shan ႁၢၼ် (hǎan), Phake ꩭꩫ် (han), Ahom 𑜑𑜃𑜫 (han), Zhuang hanq and Tày hán. Compare Middle Chinese (MC ngaenH), Proto-Mon-Khmer *haan (whence Mon အဟာန်), Proto-Khmuic *haːn.
