From Proto-West Germanic *Aþalarād, from Proto-Germanic *Aþalarēdaz, from *aþalaz (noble) +‎ *rēdaz (counsel, advice). Equivalent to æþele +‎ rǣd. Cognate with Old High German Adalrāt, Old Norse Aðalráðr.
