[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish چاك (çañ, “bell”), from Proto-Turkic *čaŋ (“bell”), a word of onomatopoeic origin. Cognate with Khakas саң (sañ), Old Uyghur [script needed] (čaŋ), Tatar чаң (çañ), Turkmen jaň and Uyghur جاڭ (jang).
