Danish[edit]

Noun[edit]

øren n pl

  1. indefinite plural of øre

Usage notes[edit]

  • The standard plural for the Danish noun øre (ear) is "ører". This word was previously believed to an archaic dualis form, but current scholars reject Danish nouns ever having had a dual form. This irregular plural is archaic but survives in the fixed expressions "[tale] for døve øren", i.e. "[speaking] for deaf ears", meaning to speak in vain, and "være lutter øren", lit. "being all ears".
