Danish[edit]

Noun[edit]

øren n du

  1. dual of øre

Usage notes[edit]

  • The standard plural for the Danish noun øre (ear) is "ører". In addition to the singular and plural forms, Danish nouns previously also had a dual form. Only two Danish nouns have retained this form and only in fixed expressions; "øren" (dual form of øre (ear)), and "øjen" (dual form of øje (eye)). In other contexts, the dual forms are archaic, and the standard plurals are used ("ører" and "øjne"). This dual form survives in the fixed expression "[tale] for døve øren", i.e. "[speaking] for deaf ears", meaning to speak in vain.
