Etymology[edit]

Coined in the 19th century by Jan Svatopluk Presl based on Polish czołg (snake) from czołgać się (to creep, to crawl).[1][2]

Usage notes[edit]

This term is used only for some genera (e.g. Lissotriton or Triturus) of the Salamandridae family. For other species of newt, the word mlok is used.
