Maltese

Etymology

Singulative derivation from Arabic جَوْهَر (jawhar, gem, jewel), from Middle Persian gwhl (gōhr) (perhaps through modern Persian گوهر (gowhar)).

Pronunciation

Noun

ġawhra f (collective ġawhar, plural ġawhriet)

  1. a jewel; a piece of jewellery; a precious ornament, especially a pearl
  2. (figurative) anything precious; a jewel; a treasure (e.g. historical, natural, etc.)

Usage notes

  • The collective form ġawhar is sometimes construed like a real plural (as in baqar), but it may also be construed like a normal collective singular.
