Etymology

From Ancient Greek ἀκανθόχοιρος (akanthókhoiros, porcupine), from ἄκανθος (ákanthos, acanthus, a prickly plant) + χοῖρος (khoîros, pig). Displaced Ancient Greek ὕστριξ (hústrix, porcupine, bristles, torture instrument). Secondary sense of hedgehog displaced Ancient Greek ἐχῖνος (ekhînos, hedgehog, etc.).

Doublet of σκαντζόχοιρος (skantzóchoiros).
