Ancient Greek[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

According to Beekes, in view of the alternations and the suffix -ιτον, the word is probably Pre-Greek. Compare also βόλιτον (bóliton, cow dung). Close to Proto-Albanian *balgā (dung) (Albanian bajgë), which may be from the same substratum, but would point to Proto-Indo-European *bolgʷ- if inherited.
