Etymology

Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἐπικοινωνία (epikoinōnía, mutual relationship), with semantic loan from French communication.[1] The Ancient Greek word is from ἐπικοινωνός (epikoinōnós) +‎ -ία (-ía), from ἐπι- (epi-, on, upon) +‎ κοινωνός (koinōnós, companion, partner), from κοινός (koinós, common; shared).[2]
