[edit]According to Hoffmann, of Semitic origin; however, he does not explain any further. This word can only be connected to the group of Hebrew זֶבַח (zéḇaḥ, “sacrifice”), Arabic ذِبْح (ḏibḥ, “sacrificial victim”) and Ugaritic 𐎄𐎁𐎈 (dbḥ, “sacrifice”).
