Ancient Greek[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

A Semitic origin has been proposed for this word, connecting it with Classical Syriac ܫܠܦܐ (šelpā, a knife-like iron tool for grasping or pulling out something) and Σαλαμβώ (Salambṓ, Babilonian goddess of love). However, the alternation β/μβ would receive a good explanation under the assumption of Pre-Greek origin.
