Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

According to Strömberg, from σαρῶνες (sarônes, net of hunters), which remains unconvincing in spite of the parallels adduced. The word has been connected with σορωνίς (sorōnís, old silver fir); since the variation α/ο cannot be explained, it must be assumed a Pre-Greek origin.
