Etymology

The word shares the formation with τυφλός (tuphlós, “blind”) and χωλός (khōlós, “lame”). Besides this word, there are also σιφνός (siphnós, “empty, void”) and σιπαλός (sipalós, “blinded; maimed”). Because of the variants σιφλ-/σιφν-/σιπαλ-, the word is probably of Pre-Greek origin.
