Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The word shares the formation with ἐδανός (edanós), ἰδανός (idanós), σκεπανός (skepanós) and στεγανός (steganós). Together with σφοδρός (sphodrós, violent), it may reflect a heteroclitic "r/n" stem, but this is uncertain. Possible Greek cognates are σφαδάζω (sphadázō, to be strongly moved or excited) and σφενδόνη (sphendónē, sling).
