From Proto-Indo-European *gʰelu-, *gʰelew- ,*gʰelōw-(tortoise). Related to χέλυς(khélus, tortoise). Compare to Proto-Slavic *žьlvъ, whence Old Church Slavonic желу(žely, turtle), Polish żółw(tortoise).
