From Proto-Indo-European *gʰelu-, *gʰelew- ,*gʰelōw- ‎(tortoise). Related to χέλυς ‎(khélus, tortoise). Compare to Proto-Slavic *žьlvъ, whence Old Church Slavonic желу ‎(žely, turtle), Polish żółw ‎(tortoise).
