From Latin Benedictus (literally blessed), possibly via an Ancient Greek intermediate which would explain the в- (v-) over б- (b-); compare Васіль (Vasilʹ), Веніямі́н (Vjenijamín). Cognates include Polish Benedykt, Russian Венеди́кт (Venedíkt).
