Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Russian Дагестан (Dagestan).

This term is first attested in the 17th century and is derived from the Azerbaijani dağ (mountain) and the Persian [Term?] suffix -стан (-stan). Equivalent to тау (taw) + -стан (-stan).
