From earlier Днѣпръ (Dněprʺ), from Old East Slavic Дънѣпръ (Dŭněprŭ), from Proto-Slavic *dŭněprŭ, from Thracian *duno- ipro, related to Persian دنیدن (danidan, “to hasten, run”), and to hydronyms like Ibr, Ibar, etc.
