Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *brъzda, whence Old Church Slavonic бръзда (brŭzda, halter), Czech brzda (brake).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [ˈbrɤzdɐ]
  • Audio:(file)

Noun

[edit]

бръ́зда (brǎ́zdaf (dialectal)

  1. (obsolete, originally) halter
  2. part of the plow which connects the drawbar to the landside

Usage notes

The singular form has mostly gone out of use. Only the earlier dual бръзде (brǎzde) (often reanalyzed as a sg. neuter) is formally attested within dialects.
