Exact etymology is yet unknown. Presumably from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Russian постав (postav, cloth generated on a loom??).

Cognate with Tatar постау (postaw), Chuvash постав (postav) / пустав (pustav, id.)

Also, possibly related to Hungarian posztó (baize).
