Etymology[edit]

From German Biosphäre (coined by Austrian geologist Eduard Suess in 1875). By surface analysis, біо- (bio-) +‎ сфе́ра (sféra). Compare Russian биосфе́ра (biosféra), Belarusian біясфе́ра (bijasfjéra), Polish biosfera.
