Bulgarian[edit]

Дубла

Etymology[edit]

Unclear. Per BER, probably from the now obsolete ду́блян (dúbljan, golden coin) in reference to the color of the bird.

Alternatively, akin to Russian ду́пель (dúpelʹ, great snipe), German Doppelschnepfe (great snipe). Compare obsolescent Bulgarian дю́ба (djúba), дю́бам (djúbam, to peck, to rasp) (Proto-Slavic *ďubati) for the unexpected -б-.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [ˈdubɫɐ]
  • (file)

Noun[edit]

ду́бла (dúblaf (masculine ду́бел)

  1. female equivalent of ду́бел (dúbel): great snipe (Scolopax major)
Synonym: (standard) голя́ма бекаси́на (goljáma bekasína)
