From Common Kypchak *egin "grain crop", from *ekin "cultivated land; crops grown on such land"; from Proto-Turkic *ek- (to sow).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (ekin, arable land, tilled land); Kazakh егін (egın, grain crops), Kyrgyz эгин (egin, grain crops), Uzbek ekin (farm crop), Uyghur ئېكىن (ëkin, arable land; farm crop), Turkish ekin (farm crop).
