From *ekägü (two as a group; a couple), from Proto-Turkic *ẹk(k)i (two).

Cognate with Kazakh екеу (ekeu, two people as a group), Kyrgyz экөө (eköö, two people as a group), Southern Altai экӱ (ekü, two), Kumyk экев (ekew, two people as a group).
