Likely Inherited from Old Church Slavonic козьльрогъ (kozĭlĭrogŭ) (attested in 1073), acquiring its current form (spelled ко́зиро́гь) by the 17th century, during the Early Modern Bulgarian period. By surface analysis, ко́зи (kózi, goat's) +‎ рог (rog, horn).

Cognates include Russian козеро́г (kozeróg), Serbo-Croatian козорог and Slovene kozorog.
