Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *lopъta.

  • IPA(key): /lôpta/

Usage notes

[edit]

The term лопта is almost always prefixed with the adjective form of the sport it is used for, eg. кошаркашка лопта to denote a basketball. In common parlance, however, two balls (the football and the basketball) have their own nicknames: the football is known as the бубамара ("ladybug") due to the Adidas Telstar's black and white panels resembling the ladybug's back spots, while the basketball is known as the "basketara", which derives from the term "basket", a nickname for basketball as a sport itself that is common in continental Europe.
