Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly borrowed from now-obsolete Polish machlarz, mechlarz, from a West Germanic term, possibly German Makler, with k-ch alternation. If so, doublet of ма́клер (mákljer, “broker”). Compare Carpathian Rusyn махля́рь (maxljárʹ), Ukrainian махля́р (maxljár).
