From Proto-Slavic *uňьjь, of further unknown origin. Has been connected to Sanskrit अवति (ávati, to protect, help) via (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *h₁ewH-, under the assumption that the adjective contains an n-suffix.
