Etymology[edit]
Paleo-Balkan substrate word of Thracian origin, likely borrowed from the definite form of Albanian rrufé. Compare Ancient Greek ῥομφαία (rhomphaía, “spear, javelin; sword”) and Latin rhomphaea, rumpia.
