Etymology

From Old East Slavic сочевица (sočevica), from сочиво (sočivo, lentil seed), from Proto-Slavic *sočivo, probably from *sòkъ (juice), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *sokʷos.

Cognate with Russian чечеви́ца (čečevíca) and Ukrainian сочеви́ця (sočevýcja).
