Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old East Slavic сочевица (sočevica),[1] from Proto-Slavic *sočevica and *sočivo,[2] probably from *sòkъ (juice), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *sokʷos. Compare Russian чечеви́ца (čečevíca), Belarusian сачаві́ца (sačavíca), Polish soczewica.

  1. lentil (any of several plants of the genus Lens, especially Lens culinaris, from southwest Asia, that have edible, lens-shaped seeds within flattened pods)
