[edit]From Old East Slavic сельдь (selĭdĭ) (1497), from earlier *сьлдь (*sĭldĭ), from Old Norse síld. Compare Ukrainian оселе́дець (oselédecʹ), Russian се́льдь (sélʹdʹ).
