From Proto-Slavic *sъmetьje. Cognate with dialectal Russian сме́тье (smétʹje), Ukrainian сміття́ (smittjá), Polish śmiecie, Czech smetí, Slovak smeť, Upper Sorbian smjeće, Serbo-Croatian smèće, Slovene smetjè. By surface analysis, с- (s-) +‎ мет- (mjet-) +‎ -ье (-ʹje).
