Bashkir

Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *čeküč (hammer), possibly from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Persian ckwc (čakuč, hammer).

The relationship between the Turkic and Persian etymons is murky and intricate, looks like there has been a two-way influence.

The Bashkir form looks anomalous in its last consonant (the regular Turkic form should have produced *sükes), and thus may be a separate adaptation of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Persian چکش (čakoš, hammer).

Cognate with Tatar чүкеч (çükeç), Karachay-Balkar чёгюч (çögüç), Nogai шоькиш (şökiş), Khakas сӧӧс, Crimean Tatar çöküç, Azerbaijani çəkic, Turkish çekiç (hammer), Uzbek cho'kich (pickaxe).
