Ultimately from Proto-Samic *tëvē, from Proto-Uralic *tiwä.

Related to Finnish syvä. Compare Northern Sami davvi, Akkala Sami [script needed] (tavval) and Skolt Sami [Term?] (ta̮vvaл).
