Etymology[edit]

Via Volga Turki, from Ottoman Turkish, made up of Persian طوطی (parrot) + Ottoman قوش (bird). The second component is identical to (and reestablished as) Bashkir ҡош (qoş, bird).

Compare with Kazakh тотықұс (totyqūs, parrot), Kyrgyz тоту куш (totu kuş, parrot), Kumyk тотукъуш (totuquş, peacock), Uzbek toʻtiqush (parrot), Azerbaijani tutuquşu (parrot), Turkish dudu kuşu (parrot).
