From Persian تنباکو (tanbâko, tobacco), from Arabic طَبَاق (ṭabāq, a type of medicinal herb) and/or طُبَاق (ṭubāq, (same)), or via (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Russian таба́к (tabák, tobacco), from the same source.

Cognate with Kazakh темекі (temekı), Nogai тамеке (tameke), Kyrgyz тамеки (tameki), Uzbek tamaki, Turkmen temmäki, Azerbaijani tənbəki, etc.
