From Proto-Turkic *teŋri ~ *taŋrɨ (god; sky, heaven).

Cognate with Old Turkic 𐱅𐰭𐰼𐰃 (täŋri, god; sky), Southern Altai теҥери (teŋeri, sky), Turkish tanrı (god). See the latter term for an extensive etymology.
