чарькодемс

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Erzya

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Possibly derived from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *čark(k)ɜ (fork(-like instrument), kedge). For a similar semantic development, compare Finnish harkita (to deliberate, consider, ponder).

Alternatively, derived from Proto-Mordvinic *čarəms ~ *šarəms (to rock, swing; turn, spin); compare Erzya чаракадомс (čarakadoms, to begin to swing, rock). Compare also Finnish ymmärtää (to understand), which is from Finnish ympäri (around).

Akin to Moksha шарьхкодемс (šaŕxkodems).
