Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Mordvinic *čoŋ, probably inherited from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *čiŋa, whence Eastern Mari шоҥ (šoŋ) and possibly Finnish hiiva (“yeast”).
