Bashkir

Etymology

Cognate with Tatar шаян (şayan, playful, frolicsome).

Occurs in Bashkir and Tatar only. Apparently related to Bashkir шаярыу (şayarıw), Tatar шаяру (şayaru, be playful or naughty).

Akhmetyanov compares this term to Nogay шая (şaya, animated, lively; reckless); however, this violates the regular correspondences.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ʂɑˈjɑn]
  • Hyphenation: ша‧ян

Adjective

шаян (şayan)

  1. playful, frolicsome; mischievous, naughty
