From dialectal Old Lithuanian jentãras, gentãras, literary giñtaras, gintãras (modern Lithuanian giñtaras). Possibly entered Belarusian via either Old Ruthenian єнтарь (jentarʹ) or Russian янтарь (jantarʹ).
