From Proto-Turkic *kïragu (frost, hoarfrost).

Cognate with Karakhanid قِراغُو (qïrağu, frost);[1] Kazakh қырау (qyrau), Kumyk къырав (qıraw), Kyrgyz кыроо (kıroo), Uzbek qirov, Turkish kırağı, Khakas хро (xro), Tuvan хыраа (xıraa), Yakut кырыа (kırıa, frost).
