Compare Karakhanid [script needed] (sanduwač, nightingale); Tatar сандугач (sanduğaç, nightingale), Kazakh сандуғаш (sanduğaş, whitethroat, Sylvia communis), Southern Altai саңдығаш (wagtail, Motacillidae spp.), etc.

No universally accepted etymology exists.

According to one of the versions, was borrowed from Sogdian *zand(u)wa:č "having a melodic voice", in which *zand "song".
