From Persian هیکل ‎(haykal, heykal, statue), from Arabic هَيْكَل ‎(haykal, armature, framework, skeleton), ultimately from Sumerian 𒂍𒃲 ‎(É.GAL, palace, temple).

Cognate with Uzbek haykal, Turkish heykel ‎(statue), etc.
