Adapted from Persian حِکَایَت (hekâyat), from Arabic حِكَايَة (ḥikāya, story, tale). Thus, doublet of хикәйә (xikəyə, story, narration).

Immediately cognate with Tatar әкият (äkiyat, fairy tale).
