Etymology[edit]

The earlier form is Ալլահվերդի (Allahverdi), named after certain Allahverdi, a 17th century leader of a nomadic Turkic tribe called Borčalu, which gave its name to the Borchali region of Georgia. The name is Turkic: compare Turkish Allahverdi, Azeri Allahverdi (literally given by God).
