Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

An Arabic name from سَوَاد (sawād, blackness, black). Borne by Sawada ibn Abd al-Hamid al-Jahhafi, an Arab governor of Armenia, and by a Persian prince who married an Armenian Bagratuni princess, both from the 9th century. Among Armenians used in the 10–14th centuries.
