Etymology[edit]

From Persian الماس ‎(almas). The spelling էլմաս ‎(ēlmas) must be from Ottoman Turkish الماس ‎(elmas). Ačaṙyan explains the -տ ‎(-t) in the form ալմաստ ‎(almast) as an inner-Armenian development, comparing such pairs as Սաղամաս ‎(Sałamas) > Սալմաստ ‎(Salmast, Salmas), սուս ‎(sus) > dialectal սուստ ‎(sust, silent), պես ‎(pes) > dialectal -պեստ ‎(-pest, like), ռուս ‎(ṙus) > dialectal ռուստ ‎(ṙust, Russian). But compare Middle Persian ʾlmʾst' ‎(almāst), Northern Kurdish almast, Zazaki almast.
